The home page pretty much explains what this site is about. As I near retirement, I am on a mission to trim down the garden size and be more specific about a realistic goal. That goal being a pantry full of produce that we will eat. Gone, mostly, are the days of just planting as much as I can and then dealing with the results.
It boils down to growing enough to eat. We know how often that we eat certain foods and, henceforth, how much that we need. Growing x number of plants is one thing, growing enough to have a pint of beets each week is a bit different. At least in my mind. It seems to me that planting x number of plants per person, for fresh and then storage, is basically one and the same – you eat the same amount regardless. If one eats a can of green beans each week, isn’t that the amount one should consider?
I suppose that if one only eats green beans while they are in season, that number of plants makes sense. Or if one only eats green beans during the off season, that number of plants might make sense. However, if one eats green beans year around, what is the difference? A pint is a pint eh? So, a pint a week equals 52 pints. That number seems to me to be more of a target than fresh plus storage. Let’s concentrate on growing that – perhaps a bit of simpler math!
